2017 Kia Optima Hybrid vs Toyota Prius

Going green is a commendable goal, and mid-size hybrids like the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid and Toyota Prius have a big role to play in reducing your carbon footprint. But you have to select the hybrid that's best suited to the breakneck pace of your lifestyle. Before you make any final decisions, check out our comparison guide to learn more about these two models.

2017 Kia Optima Hybrid vs Toyota Prius

Fuel Economy

The Prius travels further on one tank of gas than any of its hybrid competitors, earning up to 58 city/53 highway mpg in the Two Eco model. Other Prius models earn 50/54 mpg. Both are prime picks for drivers who want to reduce fuel costs.

Of course, the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid is no stranger to fuel savings. It earns 39/46 mpg - impressive numbers for a mid-size sedan that generates such a speedy ride. Instead of an electronically controlled transmission - which is what you'll find in most other hybrids - the Optima Hybrid delivers a smooth, swift ride with its six-speed automatic.

Interior Comfort

In the Optima Hybrid, high-quality cabin materials and smart design make you feel like you're getting a lot for your money. The dash is designed with function in mind, so, from behind the wheel, important controls are within your grasp. Starting with the mid-grade EX, the Optima Hybrid comes with heated leather seats, which means it only costs you a little extra for all-out luxury treatment.

We have to give the Toyota Prius excellent marks for its roomy cabin and hatchback-style cargo space - 24.6 cubic feet for your daily carry-on items. However, with the Prius, the best you can get is imitation leather. This upholstery does a pretty good job imitating the real thing, but, if you prefer the really real thing, look to the Optima Hybrid.

Tech Features

This year, Kia is going all-out with its tech features. The Uvo infotainment system doesn't leave you guessing - its touchscreen menus are responsive and intuitive. Additionally, all Optima models come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, displaying smartphone apps like Maps and Messages directly on your touchscreen. This is not only convenient - it keeps you safer by keeping your eyes on the road ahead.

We like Toyota's Entune premium infotainment system, which also includes an intuitive touchscreen. You do have to pay extra to get it, but it's worth it for extra features like real-time traffic updates and satellite radio. Still, it would be better if the Prius offered complete smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

In government crash tests, the Optima Hybrid landed a perfect five-star rating for overall protection. And this fuel-efficient sedan does more than perform well in an accident - it offers all the latest safety aids that alert you of danger in advance. With forward collision warning, you'll always know when you need to hit the brakes.

Like the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid, the Toyota Prius comes with all the basics to maximize driver control in a sticky situation - including anti-lock disc brakes and stability and traction control. Both models also offer a standard rearview camera, which gives you the means to spot any obstacles in your path - even small ones like skateboards. The Prius did almost as well as the Optima Hybrid in crash tests. However, where the Optima got five stars for side-crash protection, the Prius only earned four.
