2017 Kia Rio vs Ford Fiesta

2017 Kia Rio vs Nissan Versa

With their thrifty price tags and fuel-efficient performance, 2017 Kia Rio and Ford Fiesta are two of the most coveted subcompact models on the road. Both models are available as subcompact sedans and hatchbacks, so you can decide which body style works for you. Hatchbacks expand cargo options, and sedans go a little easier on your budget. However, you might still be wondering whether the Rio or the Fiesta is right for you. Check out our buying guide to learn more about how these subcompacts stack up against one another.

2017 Kia Rio vs Ford Fiesta

Fuel Economy

When you've got far-off places to go, the Fiesta appeals with its excellent fuel economy. In addition to earning up to 31 city/41 highway mpg, this punchy subcompact is quick to accelerate. And, with its sharp steering, the Fiesta is a great pick for driving enthusiasts with winding roads and tight corners to tackle.

Still, the 2017 Kia Rio stays in the game. It's EPA-rated to deliver up to 27/36 mpg and save you a bundle at the pump. It's also quick to accelerate, so you'll be flying by slower cars or streaming into highway traffic with the best of them.

Passenger Protection

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2017 Kia Rio its top score of "Good" in a number of crash tests - a fact that will ease your mind the next time you find yourself in breakneck highway traffic. It also comes standard with everything you need to maintain safety when road conditions stop being ideal - think four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and stability control.

In addition to standard features like anti-lock brakes, the Ford Fiesta has some cool tech features. The rearview camera, for example, shows you what's in your path, so you don't end up running over any sharp objects. However, to get to these high-tech features, you need to move up in the Fiesta trim models, and you may end up spending a lot more than you bargained for.

Interior Comfort

Parking-friendly dimensions aside, the Rio is certainly roomy on the inside. Behind the steering wheel, the height-adjustable driver seat and tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel accommodate a range of heights for a comfy commute. The Rio's rear seats are equally appealing, with impressive space for your friends. If you want maximum cargo space, choose the hatchback model. You can fold its rear seats down to create 49.8 cubic feet - more than enough cargo space for your springtime gardening supplies or weekend camping gear.

We like the Ford Fiesta's high-quality materials and interior style, which can even include heated leather seats. This might be Ford's most affordable model, but it never feels like it. Compared to the Rio, however, the Fiesta hatchback isn't as good with cargo space - offering only 25.4 cubes of maximum space with the rear seats folded. Also, if you plan to cart your adult friends around, you'll find more rear-seat passenger space in the Rio.

Tech Features

To stay connected on the go, check out the 2017 Kia Rio. It offers all the latest in infotainment technology - including Kia's excellent Uvo system with its 7-inch touchscreen interface. The system is quick to respond to your touch, which means you won't find yourself irritably jabbing at the screen to get to the app you want.

Every Ford Fiesta comes with Sync voice recognition software, so you can interact with your smartphone without looking away from the road. We also like Ford's latest iteration in infotainment, the Sync 3 system. It, too, is intuitive and easy to use. However, we wish that the Fiesta offered automatic start-stop engine technology like the Kia Rio - this cutting-edge feature would help the Fiesta earn better fuel mileage.
