Cabin Space & Comfort

If you plan to spend a lot of time in your compact, whether you're commuting or exploring the coastline, the 2017 Kia Rio is ready to play. While it might fit nicely into cramped parking spaces, inside the Rio impresses with its roomy cabin. Quality materials, including soft cloth upholstery, give your ride a generous helping of comfort and style you might not expect in a car in this class.

The Hyundai Accent struts its stuff with highly competitive head and leg room. Four passengers can settle comfortably into the Accent and head on a cross-country road trip without a complaint. However, unlike in the Rio, the Accent rear seat isn't a practical place for three passengers, who would experience a serious downgrade in elbow room. If you've got five passengers who want to feel more like passengers and less like cramped cargo, the Rio is the right option.

The 2017 Kia Rio comes out on top in the tech category because of its user-friendly UVO infotainment system. Its 7-inch touchscreen interface provides crisp, clear graphics, which make it easy to find the app you need without distracting you from the road ahead. Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity gives you modern capabilities, like hands-free calling and music screaming.

Unlike a lot of other infotainment systems out there, the Accent's includes traditional dials and knobs alongside its touchscreen interface. That means you can access important controls quickly - and without jabbing at a touchscreen. However, unlike the Rio, the Accent doesn't offer navigation, which means you're on your own during road trips or you'll be draining your data and straining to listen to the turn-by-turn directions.

Passenger Protection

The Kia Rio provides a solid safety lineup, so you can worry about more important things, like what's for dinner. Slam on the Rio's four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes to come to quick stops from high speeds. Before you back up, give the rear view camera display a quick glance to ensure that there's nothing there for you to hit on your way out.

The2017 Hyundai Accent's brakes also supply impressive panic stops, a feature that definitely comes in handy in cities crowded with pedestrians and cyclists. However, the Accent lacks high-tech safety gear like the rear view camera, giving the Rio the edge in this category.

Fuel Economy

Here, the Accent wins by a hair. Depending on which transmission you select, the Hyundai Accent earns up to 27 city/37 highway mpg. To get these fuel savings, you have to be able to drive a stick shift- or be willing to learn. With the automatic transmission, the Accent still pulls off impressive numbers, earning 26/36 mpg.

The Kia Rio comes up close behind, earning 27/36 mpg. It doesn't matter which transmission you prefer - manual or automatic - the Rio still delivers the same thrifty fuel ratings.
