2017 Kia Sedona vs Honda Pilot

If your family has outgrown the conventional four-door sedan, it's time to look for vehicles with a third row. This whole new class of vehicles offers cabin and cargo space that those who've been driving smaller cars just aren't used to. In this head-to-head, we look at some of the best on the road: the 2017 Kia Sedona minivan and Honda Pilot midsize SUV.

2017 Kia Sedona vs Honda Pilot

INTERIOR COMFORT & STYLE: Kia Sedona

Especially if you're reluctant to settle into a larger vehicle, you'll be happy to know that the 2017 Kia Sedona has an upscale interior to match its stylish exterior. There's plenty of space for two adults in front and seating for four or five more in the back two rows. Riding in the third row isn't a joy for adults, but that's kid territory anyway. The Sedona has 33.9 cubic feet of cargo space, with lots more available using the Slide-N-Stow seating. As you ride you'll discover a quiet, upscale cabin with stain-resistant cloth (leather-wrapped seats is optional). Everywhere there are quality materials and ergonomic cupholders, cubbies, and controls. Upper trims are especially luxurious--and let's not forget the sliding doors, which makes accessing the second and third row much easier.

For an SUV, the Honda Pilot feels truly cavernous. It's so roomy that even adults can sit comfortably on its third row. Like the Sedona, the Pilot seats seven or eight people on plush seats. It too has the soft-touch plastics and quality materials. The Pilot has the largest cargo capacity in its class, but still less than a Sedona minivan--and with standard doors that may require some negotiation to get into the 3rd row.

TECHNOLOGY: Kia Sedona

Even on its base model, the affordable 2017 Kia Sedona is a tech-lover's dream. It comes with 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, second-row air conditioning controls, keyless entry, four-speaker audio system, and USB port. From there the options include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 360-degree view camera, navigation, and an 8-inch touchscreen for Kia's UVO3 infotainment system. You might be surprised by some of the other touches, which seem more luxury than minivan: Infinity audio system, leather upholstery, reclining second-row captain's chairs with extendable footrests, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and multi-pane sunroof. Though a minivan is built for practicality, the Sedona doesn't leave you with bare bones design.

The Honda Pilot base model comes with a few less tech features, including a seven-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, and USB port. Unique additional features include tri-zone automatic climate control and rear-seat entertainment system. Its infotainment system, the HondaLink, might prove a bit frustrating because it's largely controlled only from the touchscreen. The clear winner here is the Sedona.

FUEL ECONOMY: Honda Pilot

The 2017 Kia Sedona gets 18 city and 24 highway miles per gallon. Though it isn't sporty, you'll enjoy its smooth ride and refined engine.

The Honda Pilot logs slightly better gas mileage, with 18/27 miles per gallon. Over the course of a year, that might save you just $150 at the pump. It benefits from agile handling and quick acceleration, belying its size.

SAFETY: Kia Sedona

Both the Kia Sedona and Honda Pilot are safe as they come. The Sedona took home a perfect five-star government safety rating and IIHS's Top Safety Pick + distinction. It comes standard with backup camera, and additional options like automatic emergency braking.

The Honda Pilot logged the exact same results: five stars from government testing and a Top Safety Pick + win. It comes with a multi-angle rearview camera standard. Additional options are available, like passenger-side blind spot camera.

Learn More about the Kia Sedona

As you can see, both the Sedona and Pilot can easily accommodate the needs of a large family. Though the Pilot has more power and better fuel economy, and the vehicles are very close in terms of safety and comfort, the 2017 Kia Sedona wins in cargo capacity and family-friendly tech options. If you want your eyes on the road and your kids buckled safely behind you, the Kia Sedona is your vehicle.
