2017 Kia Soul vs Honda CR-V

Cabin Comfort

In the 2017 Kia Soul, you'll spend hours on the road in total comfort. That's because the Soul's front seats treat you to plush support and plenty of adjustments. This wagon-style crossover is also known for its roominess. When you want to haul your friends around the bar district or sign up for the office carpool, the Soul is an excellent pick.

After a redesign for 2017, the CR-V cabin is an improvement over previous models. It's still not quite as refined as the Soul, but it'll keep you comfy for the long haul. The Honda CR-V is especially big on cargo space - fold down the rear seats for 75.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. By way of comparison, the Soul offers 61 cubes of maximum space. If you're the type who likes to collect antique furniture, the CR-V can help you tote it around.

If you can't bear to part with your smartphone, not even for a quick cruise through the Starbucks drive-thru, the Kia Soul is here for you. That's especially true when you opt into the Soul's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technology, which displays smartphone apps on the central touchscreen. That means you never have to look down at your phone. You can even use your phone's Siri or Google Assistant voice controls via the Soul's infotainment system. Making hands-free calls and streaming podcasts, therefore, is super simple.

In the Honda CR-V, you can also add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the HondaLink infotainment system. That's good news for everyone with a smartphone. However, there's one catch. The central touchscreen in the CR-V can be finicky. When it's slow to respond, it can leave you in a state of frustration.

Power & Performance

The Honda CR-V is capable and composed, but it's also good on fuel economy, earning up to 28 city/34 highway mpg. Best of all, when you select the turbocharged engine, you combine moneysaving fuel economy with a powerful performance.

In the 2017 Kia Soul, you'll still see pretty great fuel savings. Depending on which engine you select, you can earn up to 26/31 mpg. It doesn't matter if you choose the base engine or the turbocharged option - you'll still enjoy a smooth, quick ride. Of course, with the turbocharged engine, you'll have more power at your command.

We're impressed with the Soul's crash-test ratings. In government crash tests, it earned a perfect five stars for overall protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Soul its top score of "Good" in every single crash test. More than that, this crossover offers a number of savvy tech features to help you skirt danger. Use the rearview camera to spot your neighbor's runaway Chihuahua before you back out of the driveway. Driver aids, like the forward collision warning system, actively scan your surroundings to help keep you safe.

The Honda CR-V also earned top marks in government and IIHS crash tests. Like the Soul, the CR-V comes standard with antilock brakes and stability and traction control, giving you cool composure in bad weather. However, Honda's driver aids can be a little quick on the draw, crying wolf and getting on your nerves.
