2017 Kia Sportage vs Honda HR-V

With the 2017 Kia Sportage and Honda HR-V, spacious comfort and nimble handling come at an affordable rate. These crossovers might be compact - or, in the HR-V's case, subcompact - but they're roomy enough for family road trips and eco-friendly carpools. Which model represents the most in comfort and convenience? Which supplies the best fuel mileage? Check out our comparison guide to learn more.

2017 Kia Sportage vs Honda HR-V

Passenger Comfort

In this segment, it doesn't get much better than the 2017 Kia Sportage - especially if you're shopping for a roomy cabin. If the height gene runs in your family, this is the compact crossover for you. Even 6-footers fit comfortably in the backseat, with head and leg room to spare. When you settle into the Sportage's soft, supportive cushions, you can weather any road trip or traffic jam in style.

Honda HR-V passengers will enjoy one of the most comfortable rides in this class. This subcompact crossover treats everyone to a smooth, comfortable trip. If you're a tall driver, however, you may wish for greater seating adjustments - as well as increased leg room.

Convenience & Tech Features

Kia's Uvo infotainment system is the total package. The 7-inch touchscreen is crisp, with large icons and intuitive menus for maximum accessibility. Uvo also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, which displays smartphone apps directly on your central touchscreen. This technology also lets you use your phone's sophisticated voice controls, so you can stay connected without taking your eyes off the road.

The HR-V's HondaLink infotainment system also features smartphone app integration, giving you the power to make hands-free calls or stream music from devices. However, the HR-V doesn't offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for complete smartphone integration. Honda touchscreens are also known for their lackluster user experience, so you might find yourself jabbing at it in frustration.

Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Kia Sportage a 2017 Top Safety Pick. That's because it earned the IIHS's top score of "Good" in every single crash test. If that weren't enough to put your mind at ease, the Sportage offers a forward collision mitigation system that can apply the brakes when it senses an impending crash.

As with the Sportage, the Honda HR-V comes standard with a rearview camera, helping you spot any obstacles before you back out of the driveway. The Honda HR-V didn't perform as well in crash tests, however, earning the IIHS's second-highest score of "Acceptable" on small overlap front and side crash tests.

Fuel Economy

Thanks to its subcompact size, the Honda HR-V earns the best mileage of the two. Depending on powertrain, you can achieve up to 28 city/34 highway mpg. And, with its quick handling, the HR-V is fun to drive in just about any setting.

The 2017 Kia Sportage is a compact crossover, so its larger size works against it in terms of fuel economy. Depending on which powertrain you select, it earns up to 23/30 mpg. Although it doesn't pinch as many pennies at the pump, it's the quicker of the two, especially if you select the peppy turbocharged engine.
