2018 Kia Forte 5 vs Honda Civic Hatchback

2018 Kia Forte 5 vs Honda Civic Hatchback

The 2018 Kia Forte5 and Honda Civic hatchback are stiff competitors, especially when it comes to athletic performance and modern tech features. Which model is right for your life? Read our comparison guide to learn more.

User-Friendliest Infotainment: 2018 Kia Forte5

The Forte5 hatchback comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the latest in infotainment technology. You can interact with apps on your central touchscreen, and you can even use your phone's voice controls just by pressing a button on the steering wheel. Kia's UVO infotainment system is easy to use, thanks to its responsive touchscreen buttons and intuitive menus.

Honda's infotainment system is one of the Civic's rare weaknesses. The voice control system requires more steps than seem necessary, distracting you from traffic. The touchscreen interface could also be more intuitive. Luckily, the system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, so you can use these instead of the Honda interface.

Most Effective Safety Technology: 2018 Kia Forte5

Stay vigilant in the Forte5. The blind-spot monitoring system is exactly what you need in highway rush-hour traffic. It alerts you to vehicles you might not be able to see, helping you safely switch lanes. The automatic emergency braking system earned a rare score of "Superior" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This technology actively monitors the road ahead of you, automatically hitting the brakes when it senses danger.

Unfortunately, the Honda Civic hatchback's driver aids are on the oversensitive side. Even when you set the adjustable sensitivity to the lowest level, the frontal collision system will still give you false warnings. You might find yourself just turning this technology off when it would be most helpful - like during rush-hour.

Most Performance Options: 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback

This year, the Honda Civic turns up the heat with a number of high-performance hatchback options. For the most speed, check out the Civic Type R hatchback, which generates 306 horsepower and 285 pound-feet of torque for a truly enthusiastic ride. You can also test-drive the Sport Touring hatchback, which gives you ample passing power with a turbocharged, 180-horsepower version of the Civic engine.

The 2018 Kia Forte5 is also known for its fun-to-drive nature, even if it's not quite as hot a hatch as the Civic Type R. When you test-drive the sporty SX hatchback, though, you'll have 201 horses and 195 pound-feet of torque at your disposal - more than enough for an enthusiastic ride.

Best Value Proposition: 2018 Kia Forte5

Not only is the Forte5 packed with modern features, but it also starts you off with the lowest base price. You can snag a Forte5 starting at $18,200. On the flip side, the 2018 Honda Civic hatchback will set you back at least $20,050, even though the two models' base trims feature roughly the same comfort and convenience features.

These modern hatchbacks have a lot in common, but the 2018 Kia Forte5 is our favorite. On the road, this sporty hatchback is quick, easily getting you up to speed in heavy traffic. Its cutting-edge infotainment system is user-friendly and quick to respond to your input. You'll also love the Forte5's take on driver aids, which keep you on your toes without overreacting.
