2018 Kia Forte vs Honda Civic

Even though the market is dominated by crossovers right now, buyers still have a place in their hearts (and garages) for affordable and fuel-efficient compact sedans and hatches like the 2018 Kia Forte. So, let's see how it measures up against one of the real stalwarts of the segment, the evergreen Honda Civic.

2018 Kia Forte vs Honda Civic

Which Car Looks the Best?: Kia Forte

Last year, the Forte was updated a bit, which only worked to make the Kia's flagship compact sedan look better. The Forte was already a decent-looking car, but now it's best in class thanks to an arched profile, lightly sculpted sides, and long roofline that give a decidedly sporty feel to the Kia in both its hatch and sedan styles.

The Civic offers three different body styles to buyers, so you'll get more choice in customized looks than with the Forte. However, despite their different body structures, the three types of Civic actually look remarkably similar--with a design that you will either love or hate. With wider appeal , the Forte edges out the Civic.

What About Safety Ratings?: Kia Forte

Big vehicles, like trucks and SUVs, are not necessarily the safest vehicles on the road, contrary to popular belief. This truth is made evident when the Forte's crash test ratings are revealed. With a full five-star rating from the feds at the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS, the Forte can't get a whole lot better.

The fact that the Civic doesn't get the top rating from the IIHS shouldn't alarm anyone, since it's only really because of its poorly rated headlights. The Civic also offers many safety features, both standard and available, that are impressive. Even so, the Civic's failure to match the Forte's safety ratings give the Kia the edge here.

How Do These Cars Perform?: Honda Civic

You'll be impressed by the excitement that a couple of 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines can bring, which the Forte offers. The standard unit on the Kia Forte produces 147 horsepower and the optional unit ups the power ante to 164 horsepower. Both engines are capable and more than acceptable, but they're not going to thrill too many drivers with their performance.

A wide variety of powertrains are available on the Civic, which range from a 158 horsepower 2.0-liter inline-four to a 306 horsepower turbo-four in the Civic Type R. The Kia has no answer to the turbocharged power on offer in the Civic, so this round is a clear win for the Honda.

Which Car Saves at the Pump?: Honda Civic

Although not the absolute best in its class, the 2018 Kia Forte is pretty good on gas, on the whole. The Forte LX and S sedans, with the standard 2.0-liter engine and six-speed automatic transmission, are the fuel-economy champions, with the EPA rating them at 29 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway and 32 mpg combined.

There's no such thing as a gas-guzzler in the Civic range, even in the Type R. The majority of models return somewhere in the region of 35 mpg combined, with the best numbers coming from the entry-level LX sedans with the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-four engine and automatic transmission. Those are rated by the EPA as good as 31 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway and 34 mpg combined, which hands another win to the Honda.

Learn More about the Kia Forte

The truth is that the Kia Forte and the Honda Civic are both great vehicles, and it's unlikely that anyone will be disappointed with either compact. Of course, your own personal priorities will determine what matters most--performance or fuel economy or interior space or style--but price is likely an important factor. The Honda Civic starts about $2,000 higher than the 2018 Kia Forte, making the impressive Forte even more of a contender in this crowded compact segment. You simply can't go wrong with the Forte.
