2018 Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid vs Chevrolet Volt

Stylish, efficient plug-in hybrid sedans like the 2018 Kia Optima Hybrid and Chevrolet Volt combine rich passenger comfort with satisfying all-electric driving ranges. Which should you choose? Read our comparison guide to learn more.

Modern Performance: 2018 Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid

With its traditional six-speed automatic transmission, the Optima Plug-In Hybrid is a segment standout. Whereas competitors tend to utilize a continuously variable transmission, which can be slow and loud, the Optima's six-speed automatic does a great job of getting you up to speed. Of course, it's also tuned for maximum fuel economy, helping you earn 103 MPGe in combined city and highway driving.

Perhaps predictably, the Volt features a continuously variable transmission in its hybrid powertrain, which can sometimes feel a bit unresponsive. Still, this sedan does an excellent job of getting you around town as smoothly as possible. It also can't help but impress with an EPA rating of 106 MPGe combined.

All-Electric Range: 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Here, the Volt can't lose. It travels an estimated 53 miles on battery power alone, besting other plug-in hybrids.

Of course, the 2018 Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid will still help you save a ton on gas. It can travel up to 29 miles on just battery power. If you live close to work, or if your job has a charger in the parking lot, you might not even need to switch into hybrid mode during the workweek.

Most Luxurious Cabin: 2018 Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid

The Optima Plug-In Hybrid comes fully loaded with everything you need for total on-road comfort and convenience. Thanks to standard equipment, including leather upholstery and the heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, you can drive in the lap of luxury. This hybrid also includes all the latest in smartphone integration, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to display apps like Phone and Messages on your central touchscreen.

With the Chevrolet Volt, you can choose from two trim models. However, it doesn't come standard with as many upscale features. For example, leather upholstery is an add-on in the base LT model.

Technology: It's a Tie!

If staying connected is your only criteria, you've got a tough choice in front of you. Both the 2018 Kia Optima Hybrid and the Chevrolet Volt come standard with complete smartphone integration, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. You can use this technology to interact with popular apps, like Phone, Messages, and Music, directly on your hybrid's central touchscreen. There's also no need to take your hands off the wheel, because you can access your phone's voice controls via a button on the steering wheel. Both models also come standard with keyless entry and ignition, so you can hop in and hit the road in minimal time.
