2018 Kia Optima vs Ford Fusion

If you want to find a place in the auto market that is chock full of awesome, you might want to take a look at midsize sedans. With models like the 2018 Kia Optima and Ford Fusion, it's hard to believe you can find much better. Let's see how these two heavyweights measure up head-to-head.

2018 Kia Optima vs Ford Fusion

Styling

The 2011 Optima shook up the segment and transformed Kia into the high quality brand we now know. Today's Optima looks a lot like that revolutionary sedan, other than the front fascia, even though we are currently its next generation. The 2018 Optima is still a very sleek, modern, and stylish car, definitely well above average in the looks department.

The current generation of the Fusion began in 2013, but it's still one of the most attractive cars in its class without a hint of age. You'll notice a hint of Aston Martin about it, a carryover from Ford's days of owning that British luxury sports car brand--if there's a bigger compliment to give, we're not sure what it is.

Engines and Performance

Although you can choose from three engines in the Kia Optima, they're perhaps not as diverse as they could be. These engines are all excellent, but all three are also four-cylinder units. The EX and LX models get a 2.4-liter engine putting out 185 horsepower, but more fun is available with SX model with its 2.0-liter engine that puts a much more impressive 245 horsepower at your disposal. The thriftiest engine is a 178 horsepower 1.6T, which comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission instead of the usual six-speed auto.

The Fusion offers three engines to buyers: a 2.5L 4-cylinder in the S and SE that offers 175 hp, a 2.0L EcoBoost in the Titanium and Platinum that gets 231 hp (and a bit more with premium fuel), and an impressive 2.7L EcoBoost V6 that develops 325 hp and comes standard with all-wheel drive. It's hard to beat those numbers, so the Fusion gets the nod in this category.

Interior Comfort and Quality

The Kia Optima isn't a luxury car, but if you were put into a 2018 model blindfolded you'd probably think you were in one once you opened your eyes. The cabin is spacious, comfortable, well-equipped, and brimming with quality materials. It's also very stylish, so it's a challenge to find anything to criticize.

Nothing in the cabin has changed in the 2018 model, which despite some sizeable exterior proportions isn't as spacious as it could be. The Fusion's packaging just isn't on par with more recent designs. The sloping roofline may help the look of the Fusion, but it doesn't do much for six-footers trying to sit in the backseat.

Fuel Economy

The 2.4 is probably the most popular engine for the Optima, which the EPA rates at a reasonable 24 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg combined. The best numbers come from the 1.6 with the dual-clutch transmission, which are 28 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the highway and 32 mpg combined.

The Fusion's base engine is well behind the Kia for fuel economy with ratings of 21 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined.
