2018 Kia Optima vs Hyundai Sonata

Kia and Hyundai share components, engines and platforms, but to stay competitive, the two offer different approaches to the market. Where the two brands' vehicles look quite different is the midsize sedan. The 2018 Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata compete fiercely for your loyalty--but which one offers you the best buy?

2018 Kia Optima vs Hyundai Sonata

Styling: Kia Optima

Since 2011, when the new Optima transformed the Kia brand, the Optima has been considered a benchmark for exterior styling. One of the most attractive cars in its class, the Optima's fourth generation redesigned less than you might think. The changes focused on the front fascia, rather than the overall silhouette. The effect is more modern and sleek-looking, winning over nearly all those who see it.

The Sonata had its last redesign a year before the Kia, and the changes greatly improved over the previous model. Those improvements don't come close to touching the stylistic brilliance of the Optima, though.

Safety: Kia Optima

Few vehicles of any type can claim a perfect set of scores from both the federal and independent crash testers, but the Kia Optima is one that can. Add to those scores a wide range of standard and available safety equipment, and you can feel confident in the safety of the Optima, top to bottom.

Because these two vehicles share a platform, you probably won't be surprised that the Sonata also boasts outstanding safety credentials. Like the Kia, the Sonata gets a full five-star rating from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS. But a single rogue four-star score for rollover protection from the feds means it's not quite perfect--unlike the Kia Optima.

Interior Comfort and Quality: Hyundai Sonata

The cabin of the Optima is spacious and well-appointed, a great example of how Kia (as a brand) is moving gradually toward the upscale market as time goes by. You can't describe anything about the interior as "budget"--it's comfortable, quiet, and well-equipped, just short of true luxury.

You'll actually find a bit more passenger volume inside the Sonata, as it can boast 106.1 cu.-ft. to the Optima's 104.8 cu.-ft. The quality of the Hyundai interior is at least on a par with the Kia, but the Sonata also has a little more trunk space than the Optima.

Quality and Value: Kia Optima

Kia Optima starts with a starting MSRP of $22,000, with five trim options to choose from that go up to $36,000 on the posh SX Limited. The Kia Optima has an array of standard features, all of which buyers will be happy to have. Kia has come in first in JD Power's initial quality survey for two years in a row, with four Kias leading their segments.

The Hyundai Sonata also has a starting MSRP around $22,000, though a few dollars more than the Optima, and has seven trims to choose from. The top trim Limited 2.0T costs quite a bit less than the top trim Optima, coming in around $32K. Other than safety awards, though, Hyundai doesn't earn awards for quality or value.

Naturally, with so much shared between these two, it's hard to find huge differences. But Kia and Hyundai do stay competitive, and in this competition the Kia Optima moves narrowly ahead of the Sonata. In quality, styling, and safety, the Kia Optima proves that it's better than its rival.
