2018 Kia Sorento vs Ford Edge

While competition isn't as fierce among mid-size sport utility vehicles as it is among compact SUVs, you'll still find a dizzying number of options as a potential buyer. In this head-to-head, we consider two of the best: the Kia Sorento and the Ford Edge. We'll help you decide which mid-size SUV is right for you and your family.

2018 Kia Sorento vs Ford Edge

INTERIOR COMFORT & STYLE: Ford Edge

As you would expect in an SUV this size, the Kia Sorento is spacious. It comfortably seats five on two rows or seven if you choose the optional third row. The second row is comfortable for passengers of any size, and though the third row is designed with kids in mind, it still has more leg room than most third rows in its class. Like most recent Kias, the Sorento has an upscale look and high-quality materials.

Like the Sorento, the 2018 Ford Edge has a premium interior with quality materials. The Edge doesn't have a third-row option, however, so buyers are limited to seating for five. What the Edge does offer all buyers is outstanding cargo capacity. While the Sorento offers only 11 cubic feet of it behind the third row, the Edge starts at 39 cubic feet and expands to an amazing 73 with the seats folded down.

TECHNOLOGY: Kia Sorento

One of the biggest strengths of most Kias is its tech and the Sorento is no exception. All Sorentos come with Bluetooth, USB port, and user-friendly buttons and knobs. Upgrades include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, automatic headlamps, heated front seats, a power driver's seat with memory, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone connectivity. Owners will appreciate Kia's UVO system, which is both intuitive and responsive. If you're a tech lover, you won't be disappointed.

The Ford Edge has similar standard features, with Bluetooth, voice command, and two USB ports. The Edge also offers options like real-time traffic and weather, an extra USB port, satellite radio, and smartphone connectivity. The SYNC 3 infotainment system is user-friendly.

Performance: Kia Sorento

The 2018 Kia Sorento gets 20 city miles and 27 highway miles per gallon. Those numbers aren't fantastic in this class, but they beat some of the other family vehicles that the Sorento may be competing with. Some critics complain that the Sorento's steering isn't as responsive as most in its class, though, which may bother drivers.

While the Ford Edge is considered the sportier car in this comparison, critics also level some complaints at its performance, suggesting that its transmission is slow to shift. That said, the Edge gets marginally better gas mileage, with 21/29 mpg--but the difference isn't enough to compensate for sluggish shifting, especially when accelerating on the highway.

SAFETY: Kia Sorento

In terms of safety, the Kia Sorento and Ford Edge are neck and neck, but the Sorento pulls ahead by offering more active safety features and better overall safety test results. While both the Kia and Ford vehicles both earned five stars in government crash tests, the independent tester IIHS awarded the Sorento its Top Safety Pick + while the Edge received mixed results. The Sorento offers buyers a host of safety options, including automated-emergency-braking system, surround-view camera, rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot detection, rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and Dynamic Bending Light.

The Edge struggled in its IIHS testing, scoring low on its headlights and front driver-side overlap test. The Ford offers a number of safety features, but fewer than its competitor: adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with brake support, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, active park assist, a 180-degree camera system, rain-sensing wipers, and inflatable rear safety belts.

Learn More about the Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento is the winner in this comparison between two stellar mid-size SUVs. Though the Ford Edge grabs the prize for better cargo space, the Sorento boasts more tech features, more seating options, and more safety features. If you want more, while paying less, consider test driving the Kia Sorento.
