2018 Kia Soul vs Mazda 3 Hatchback

When you're looking for a smart, peppy, and fun ride--without busting your budget--you've probably already figured out that the 2018 Kia Soul and the 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback are two of your best bets. But can the spunky little SUV really compete with Mazda's impressive hatchback? Let's put them side by side and see.

2018 Kia Soul vs Mazda 3 Hatchback

Best Upgrades for 2018: 2018 Kia Soul

This year, the Kia Soul is as good a value as it's ever been. Add the Convenience package to the base model and you've got a high-tech, affordable subcompact crossover SUV. This year, the Convenience package adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, smartphone integration features that aren't offered on the Mazda 3 Hatchback. This technology displays smartphone apps, including Maps and Messages, on your central touchscreen, so you can avoid looking at your phone. The Convenience package also now includes automatic climate control, allowing driver and front passenger to set two different AC temperatures for maximum comfort.

The 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback shuffled some features around, but, other than that, it's mostly the same as the 2017 Mazda 3. The base Sport trim, however, introduces extra safety systems, including low-speed forward collision mitigation to help you avoid a crash.

Best Value: 2018 Kia Soul

The 2018 Kia Soul delivers both the lower MSRP, starting at $16,200, and a longer list of comfort and convenience features. Standard tech features include Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a USB port, making it easy to stay connected. Unlike with the Mazda 3 Hatchback, you can add a number of upscale comforts to the base model, including automatic climate control and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities.

The 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback starts at $18,095. While it does come standard with the handy Mazda Connect infotainment system, this compact car doesn't offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That price also includes a six-speed manual transmission only. You have to pay extra for the six-speed automatic.

Best Performance: 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback

Mazda tends to put its best foot forward in terms of performance, and the Mazda 3 Hatchbackis no exception. It's fun to drive in any setting, whether you're setting out for a day of around-town errands or cruising up the highway to a far-off vacation destination. Precise steering and athletic handling give you the tools you need around tight corners and down winding roads. In the hatchback model, you can even optimize fuel economy, earning up to 28 city/37 highway mpg.

The 2018 Kia Soul may look boxy, but it's almost as fun to drive as the Mazda 3 Hatchback, thanks in part to its optional turbocharged engine capable handling. If you're looking for serious off-the-line speed, the Soul's turbocharged engine is unmatched in the subcompact crossover segment. And, on a winding road, the Soul might just surprise you with its agile handling and responsive steering.

Safety Features: 2018 Kia Soul

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Kia Soul a 2018 Top Safety Pick+. This designation means that the Soul earned the IIHS's top score of "Good" in every single crash test. In addition, this sporty crossover earned a rare "Superior" for its front crash protection system, which automatically applies the brakes to help you avoid a nasty dustup.

The Mazda 3 Hatchback did almost as well, earning the IIHS moniker of 2018 Safety Pick (though without the "+," because it didn't perform as well in headlight tests). As with the Soul, you can add a number of high-tech safety aids to help you maintain vigilance. These include a blind-spot monitoring system that helps you keep track of traffic on a three-lane highway.
