2018 Kia Sportage vs Hyundai Kona

2018 Kia Sportage vs Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona is a brand new subcompact crossover vehicle. Small enough to be a car, but on an SUV platform. The Kona is named after the western districts of the island of Hawaii. It's chic and cute and new. But is it any good? Here we'll pair it with a rival, the 2018 Kia Sportage. Manufactured since 1993, this compact SUV has received updates and refreshes that has kept it trendy and new. Its steadily increasing domestic sales attest to its soaring popularity. Does the Kona have what it takes to rival the Sportage?

Tech Features: Kia Sportage

Kia Sportage Tech

First of all, let's talk tech. The Kia Sportage comes standard with 5-inch touchscreen, UVO infotainment system, six speakers, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and USB port. You'll love the UVO system. It's easy-to-use, just like the physical knobs and buttons conveniently placed on the console. The display is high, where you want it to be, but stays below the dash. Available options include push-button start, heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, larger touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a faster-charging USB port, navigation, HD Radio, premium audio system, and hands-free power liftgate. If you want it, the Sportage likely has it.

By comparison, the Kona gives you everything standard the Sportage has, except it swaps out satellite radio for keyless entry. But if you want that satellite radio, just take a step up to get it, plus blind-spot monitoring, heated front seats, and proximity-key entry. Going down the list, it looks like the Kona offers the same tech options as the Sportage. The only thing that stands out is its wireless charging capability. Noticeably missing in the Kona are adaptive cruise control, heated steering wheel, and ventilated seats. The retractable display sits above the dash. It's a close competition, but the Kia Sportage wins out for having more tech options and time-tested, intuitive controls.

Styling: Kia Sportage

Kia Sportage Styling

It's no doubt the Hyundai Kona has bold styling. Coming in colors like Surf Blue and Lime Twist and with TV spots that splash color all over the screen, Hyundai is banking on it. But looks are subjective. See for yourself and you'll know if you love the split headlights and what Hyundai calls "urban smart armor" of the Kona. To us, it looks a little like a beach buggy, for better or for worse.

With its unique tiger grille and prominent headlights, the Kia Sportage looks like it's staring you full in the face and saying hello. The Sportage is like a blend of every popular vehicle on the market today, with sharp creases and flowing contours. Its styling isn't as polarizing as the Kona's--more sophisticated, more stylish. These are matters of taste, but the Sportage seems at home in more places than the location-specific, beach-loving Kona.
