2018 Kia Sportage vs Hyundai Tucson

2018 Kia Sportage vs Hyundai Tucson

Put the 2018 Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson next to each other and you'll probably say they both look like great SUVs. But they're in a very competitive class where just even a minor flaw can leave one or the other trailing behind several other eager models. Which stands out from the packt? We'll see in this head-to-head.

Interior Comfort and Style

Kia is a people-pleaser. They've made the Sportage so much like home, you may never want to leave. Its luxurious interior is composed of high-quality materials and gads of nice touches you never knew you wanted. Soundproofed floor panels quiet engine noise. Spacious seating for both front and back seat passengers democratizes the available cubic feet. Those rear seats even recline!

The Tucson also fits five on two rows. It keeps a nice ship, boasting a clutter-free dash and intuitive controls. But hard plastics mar the look of the cabin.

The Sportage lives up to the Kia reputation for great tech. Even coveted features are numerous and come standard, like 5-inch touchscreen, intuitive UVO infotainment system, six speakers, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and USB port. Additional options include push-button start, heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, a larger touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a faster-charging USB port, navigation, HD Radio, a premium audio system, and hands-free power liftgate. Lots of physical knobs and buttons are a literal lifesaver on the road by keeping your eyes where they belong.

The 2018 Hyundai Tucson offers just a little less. It comes equipped with standard 5-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, Bluetooth and USB, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Like the Sportage, you need to step up a trim to get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Fuel Economy and Performance

The Sportage has average fuel economy, getting 22 city miles and 29 highway miles per gallon. The Tucson doesn't fare much better, getting 23 city and 30 highway mpg. But with the Sportage's lackluster power and the better handling on the Tucson, we have to hand this one to the Hyundai.

If you're interested in safety, you've come to the right class. The 2018 Kia Sportage boasts a five-star score in safety ratings and plenty of safety tech like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, and automatic pre-collision braking. A lot of this is included from the base trim.

The Hyundai Tucson is no safety slouch either. It got identical marks in government safety tests and hosts a ton of safety features, like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane change assist, blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. But unlike the Sportage, most of these features are out of reach until you climb to the upper trims.

Learn More About the Kia Sportage

The Hyundai Tucson might win in a fuel economy contest, but only marginally. And it has better performance, but in a class not known for power anyway. In every other category, the Kia Sportage takes the cake. Come visit Allentown Kia and see a Sportage yourself.
