2018 Kia Sportage vs Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep brand stands out because of its rugged outdoorsiness and four-wheel drive. But how does it fare in other areas? In this head-to-head comparison, we put another compact SUV, the 2018 Kia Sportage, up against the Jeep Cherokee to see how they shape up.

2018 Kia Sportage vs Jeep Cherokee

The 2018 Kia Sportage seats five in a quiet, streamlined cabin. The Sportage boasts a luxurious interior, spacious seating in both front and back, and reclining back seats that will impress even the grumpiest passenger. Need to haul some extra cargo? The Kia adapts to your needs, allowing you to fold the back seats down all the way to create 60 cubic feet of storage space.

Despite its rugged exterior, the 2018 Jeep Cherokee also has a quiet cabin and upscale interior. The seats are supportive and comfortable. Though the Cherokee has more leg room than the Sportage, some drivers find that the cabin feels cramped due to its small, high windows. The Jeep Cherokee also has only 24.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the back seats, a very small amount for its class.

FUEL ECONOMY: Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage gets 22 city and 29 city miles per gallon. Those efficiency numbers won't impress someone driving a compact car, but it's far better than many of the Sportage's family vehicle rivals.

The 2018 Jeep Cherokee will get you close to Mother Nature, but isn't too kind to her. With the worst fuel economy in its class, it gets only 18/26 mpg. That's a lot of gas spent on very few miles.

PERFORMANCE: Jeep Cherokee

While the base Kia Sportage engine isn't very powerful, it shifts smoothly and performs well around town. If you prefer something more athletic, opt for the turbocharged Sportage for even better acceleration and speed. Like the Jeep Cherokee, all-wheel drive is available on all Kia Sportage trims.

True to its Jeep name, the Cherokee is an athletic vehicle. Every trim has a powerful V6 engine available as an option and the Cherokee can actually venture off the beaten path and back again with four-wheel drive. Those who want to take advantage of that off-roading capability should choose the pricier Trailhawk trim.

SAFETY: Kia Sportage

Good news for those who want a safe and reliable SUV: the Kia Sportage has you covered. The Sportage earned a perfect five-star rating in government safety ratings. And, new for 2018, even the base model can be outfitted with active safety features like blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and automated emergency braking.

The 2018 Jeep Cherokee was not necessarily built with safety in mind. The Cherokee earned only four stars in government crash testing and its safety features are slim to none. The base model also cannot be equipped with any active safety features. Only more expensive trims benefit from options like blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, park assist, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning.

Learn More about the Kia Sportage

While the Jeep Cherokee can take you up the mountain and down again with ease, its muscular performance and off-road capability are two of its few consistent advantages. The Kia Sportage boasts more head room, more cargo space, more safety features, a better crash test rating, and better fuel economy. If you live or work in the wilderness, the Jeep Cherokee is your sport utility vehicle. For everyone else, the Sportage might be more your speed.
