2018 Kia Sportage vs Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

2018 Kia Sportage vs Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Commutes are longer, kids are involved in more classes and activities than ever, and communities are less walkable. The bottom line: the average American spends more time on the road than ever before. You're going to want a comfortable interior with convenient options. If you've been inside a Kia lately, you know that their UVO infotainment system sets a high bar. And their vehicles' cabins tend to be upscale, spacious, and attractive.

How does 2018's newcomer Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross compare to the tried-and-true Kia? Which has the better interior and options? In this comparison, we'll look at these two models from the inside out. Because, if you're like most Americans, you're going to see the inside of your car far more than you'll see it parked in your driveway.

The Kia Sportage is stylish, comfortable, and spacious. Garnering favorable comparisons to Audi, the Sportage interior looks classy. It's filled with soft-touch materials, stain-resistant fabrics, and obvious attention to detail. A lot of the Sportage's success is in its restraint. Everything is in its place without the clutter of some vehicles. Nice touches like a console slightly angled toward the driver as well as a gear shifter and controls within easy, natural reach make driving, not just sitting in, a Sportage comfortable.

Like the Sportage, the Eclipse Cross fits five people on two rows of seats. It's not as roomy in the back of an Eclipse Cross as in the Sportage. The Mitsubishi's cabin is nice, but not as nice as that of the Sportage. It's got some hard plastics and the display protrudes a bit too far above the dash for our tastes. There are no knobs anywhere in the vehicle, which is a very different design philosophy than the Sportage.

If you spend a lot of time on the road, you probably know that pastimes make the drive more palatable. Whether it's audiobooks or podcasts, music or phone calls, your infotainment or bluetooth system can help you enjoy your time in the car.

Kia's UVO infotainment system benefits from an intuitive interface, with physical knobs for quick adjustments and a 5-, 7-, or 8-inch display that sits high on the console but not above the dash. UVO reacts as quickly as today's popular smartphones and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to sync your phone to the car.

On the other hand, the Eclipse's infotainment interface has a steep learning curve. Its touchpad sits far from the display, which floats above the dash. The system is not intuitive and some complain about its placement, with the gear shifter in the way. That can be frustrating and an unnecessary distraction from the road where your attention should be.

At the dealership, be sure to sit inside both vehicles. See how quickly you can turn on the radio, find a favorite station, and adjust the volume. Does the seat support you? Does it adjust easily? Do you fit in the back seat? Would your tallest friend? If you can comfortably perform these functions and say yes to these questions, you're probably sitting in the Sportage.
