2018 Kia Stinger vs BMW 4 Series

2018 Kia Stinger vs BMW 4 Series

Kia isn't afraid to wade into uncharted waters. Take the all-new Kia Stinger which debuted this year. It's a fearless new take on the grand tourer model. In this head-to-head, we pit it against an established name: the BMW 4 Series.

Styling: Kia Stinger

If the Kia Stinger isn't love at first sight, you might not be the performance car type. It's not it, it's you. Because the Stinger is a gorgeous car. It also has enough practical elements to make it more than just eye candy. Four doors? Check. Hatchback? Check. Enough back seat for the kids to sit comfortably? Check. But it's primarily about having fun.

By comparison, the BMW 4 series (the "4" means four-door) seems like a stately sedan. It looks lean and performance-oriented in its own way, but more subdued. Not like the aggressive-looking Stinger.

Power and Performance: Kia Stinger

You have your pick of two different engines for the 2018 Kia Stinger: peppy 255-horsepower 2-liter turbo four or powerful 365-horsepower twin-turbo V-6. Guess which one is bound to be more popular.

2018 Kia Stinger Performance

You get a choice with the BMW 4 series as well, but these engine options are a little more restrained. There's the 248-horsepower inline-four or the 320-horsepower inline-six. Each is a twin-turbo and an excellent engine, but the Stinger puts up better numbers.

Interior: Kia Stinger

Without a doubt, the front seats in the Kia Stinger offer more room and comfort than those in the back. But kids and the occasional adult probably won't mind much. Everyone will appreciate the quality materials and suave look. There are tons of standard and available options to soothe and entertain your passengers.

The 4 series interior is luxurious and welcoming. It's opulent and sporty in one package. Still, it's not as comfortable as the interior of the Kia. And when you start adding the tech you crave, you'll find the price tag climbs precipitously.

Drivetrains: BMW 4 Series

The 2018 Kia Stinger offer options, but the BMW 4 Series offers a little more. With the Stinger, you have your choice between standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. All models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, though there is no manual option.

The BMW 4 Series, true to their German auto engineering, offers rear-wheel drive standard. There is an xDrive all-wheel drive system available for those who choose it. Where the BMW tops the Kia is in added choice between standard eight-speed automatic transmission or an optional six-speed manual.

Learn More About the Kia Stinger

The BMW 4 Series and Kia Stinger are pretty evenly matched. But if you're not tied to brand-name loyalty, you'll pick the Stinger every time. Its aggressive mein paired with its pacifying price tag make it an obvious choice. The Stinger is consistently thousands of dollars less than the 4 Series all through different tiers and options, making this decision an easy one.
