2019 Kia Niro vs Hyundai Kona

2019 Kia Niro vs Hyundai Kona

Subcompact sport utility vehicles are the new kids on the block. The Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona, for example, have only been around for a few years. But these mighty tinys are pretty popular, with a commanding view of the road, SUV look, and sporty engines and suspension. The Niro and Kona, especially are in a fight for the fuel economy-loving hearts of buyers in this segment. In this comparison guide, we'll take a look at the 2019s from each of these competitors and see which comes out on top.

Fuel Economy: Tie

When we start dealing with hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric cars, gas mileage gets hard to compare. But we'll do our best here. The big news from the Kia Niro in for 2019 is the addition of a plug-in hybrid version to the lineup. Called simply the 2019 Kia Niro EV, this plug-in SUV has a range of 240 miles on a single charge. There's no word on the electronic gas mileage, but range is probably a better measurement for a plug-in anyway. The more conventional Niro hybrid gets 52 city miles and 49 highway miles per gallon.

By comparison, the base 2019 Hyundai Kona gets 27 city mpg and 33 highway mpg. Compared to the Niro, the Kona's gas mileage isn't great. But the electronic Kona has a range of 258 miles, slightly outpacing the Niro EV. Unfortunately, there's no hybrid option on the Kona, leaving you with a choice between a gas guzzler and an all-electric. We'll call this one a tie, since the electric Kona is slightly better than the Niro EV, but the standard Niro has far better fuel economy than the non-hybrid standard Kona.

Styling: 2019 Kia Niro

Styling is a subjective topic, we know. But lots of people think subcompact SUVs are cute, simply due to their size. And, when deciding between the Hyundai Kona or the Kia Niro, you need to make a choice whether you want the cute factor dialed up to a 10 or not. Because while the Kia Niro tries to imitate larger SUVs in styling and exterior appearance, the Hyundai Kona embraces its miniature vibe. The Kia Niro has wide, angled headlights and a body that is almost exactingly average in height, width, and length.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Kona has almost slits for headlights and a low, truncated body, exaggerating its small size. In other words, the Kona ups the cute factor. So, do you want to feel like a grownup or a little kid? We're betting most people want the former, so we're giving this category to the Niro.

Cargo Room: 2019 Kia Niro

As you can probably guess, space is at a premium in subcompact vehicles. The shorter Kona, naturally, is going to have less passenger and cargo room than the Niro. There's 7 extra cubic feet of passenger room in the Niro, and there's 9 extra cubic feet of cargo room in the Niro as well. That's 54.5 cubes in the Niro and 45.8 in the the Kona. If you need the space, this one's a no-brainer.

With comparable fuel economy, better styling, and more cargo and passenger room, we recommend the Kia Niro.
