Kia Soul vs Kia Rio

Kia Soul vs Kia Rio

Choosing between the 2018 Kia Soul and Kia Rio can be tough. The Soul has a uniquely sporty style, with its hatchback-style subcompact crossover design. It's also home to an impressive amount of head- and legroom for a comfortable commute. The Rio, available as a subcompact hatchback or sedan, is the perfect commuter vehicle. Not only is it fuel-efficient, but it's also enhances your ride with modern creature comforts. So which is your best bet? Check out our comparison guide to learn more.

Cabin Space and Comfort

In the subcompact crossover segment, it's hard to find a model that's roomier than the Kia Soul. In the front seat, you'll find wide, supportive seating for long-haul comfort. The Kia Soul's unique exterior design allows for substantial head room in both rows, a treat for tall passengers. We're also fans of the Kia Soul's cargo hold, which provides 19 cubic feet for all of your beach supplies and weekend bags. Fold down the rear seats and load 61 cubic feet of maximum cargo space with IKEA boxes or Costco hauls.

2018 Kia Soul Interior

In the 2018 Kia Rio, you're getting a great deal on comfort, with a well-constructed cabin and substantial-feeling materials. Tall passengers fit comfortably in the front and the rear of the Rio, but it's probably best not to seat a tall passenger behind a tall driver. In sedan models, you get 13.7 cubic feet of cargo space for your daily carry-on items. Choose the Kia Rio hatchback for maximum cargo space, with 17.4 cubes behind the rear seats and 32.8 cubes max.

Fuel Economy & Performance

With its compact size and fuel-efficient powertrain, the 2018 Kia Rio saves you the most at the pump. The manual transmission gives you the most mileage, with 29 city/37 highway mpg. However, the automatic-equipped Rio follows close behind, achieving 28/37 mpg.

The 2018 Kia Soul combines punchy power with a smooth ride. Each trim model offers its own engine, but the base model Soul achieves the best EPA ratings, earning 26 city/31 highway mpg. If your desire for speed trumps fuel economy, you'll be happiest with the top-trim Kia Soul's turbocharged four-cylinder, which kicks out 201 horsepower for seamless merging and massing maneuvers.

Here, the 2018 Kia Soul and the Kia Rio have much in common. Both offer Kia's Uvo interface, which includes a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, voice controls, and complete smartphone integration. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity display smartphone apps on your central touchscreen, so you can stay in the loop without actually touching your phone.

2018 Kia Rio Tech

The 2018 Kia Soul offers some tech features that you won't find on the budget-conscious Rio. For example, both models offer keyless entry, but only the Soul gives you keyless ignition. You can also add a premium Harman Kardon audio system to your Soul, but you won't find this option on the Kia Rio.

Between the two, the 2018 Kia Soul offers the sturdiest safety lineup. In government crash tests, the Kia Soul earned a perfect five-star rating for overall protection. When you add the Primo package, your Kia Soul comes equipped with a wide range of driver safety aids to help you avoid dustups. For example, the forward collision warning system with emergency braking detects a potential crash and automatically applies the brakes to help you avoid damages. Blind-spot alert helps you keep track of any vehicles lurking just out of sight.

In the 2018 Kia Rio, you won't find as many high-tech extras. However, all Rio models come with a rearview camera to help you back out of tight spot without scuffing anyone's paint job. When you upgrade to the top-trim Kia Rio EX, forward collision warning with automatic braking is quick to react to an oncoming crash. The 2018 Kia Rio has not been rated in crash tests.

Both of these subcompacts have a lot to offer, albeit to different kinds of driver. The 2018 Kia Soul is a subcompact crossover that's big on style, passenger space, and on-road power. The Soul also introduces a wider variety of safety and tech features to help you get through the day with maximum peace of mind. The 2018 Kia Rio is a subcompact car that puts a budget-friendly price tag on a comfortable cabin and fuel-efficient performance. The Rio is perfect for commuters who want to save money upfront as well as at the pump.
