Kia Soul vs Kia Soul EV

Kia Soul vs Kia Soul EV

Kia Soul vs Kia Soul EV

At first glance, the 2017 Kia Soul and Kia Soul EV may seem identical - but these sporty crossovers appeal to very different kinds of buyers. Before you make any commitments, consider your personal preferences and read our comparison guide to learn more about how these two models differ.

Sportiest Performance: 2017 Kia Soul

The gasoline-powered Kia Soul is the right choice for driving enthusiasts. It's the model with the sportiest handling and swiftest acceleration. If you want an edge over other vehicles in this segment, check out the Soul's athletic turbocharged engine. It'll have you zooming around town with the best of them.

Of course, the Kia Soul EV has plenty of fine points in this department. Its electric powertrain delivers a burst torque-rich power from a standing stop, so you can get up to speed quickly. The regenerative braking system helps you conserve power in stop-and-go traffic.

Greenest Ride: 2017 Kia Soul EV

The Soul EV has the power you need to hit the coffee shop, head to work, out for a cocktail, and then home again - all week long. It earns 105 MPGe in combined city driving, which is more than enough for most commutes. When you get home, use the DC fast-charge port to promptly regenerate the battery. It charges an empty battery up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

Of course, the gasoline-powered Kia Soul balances smooth power with pretty impressive fuel economy. Depending on powertrain, it earns up to 26 city/31 highway mpg.

Interior Luxury: Buyer's Choice

Inside, the 2017 Kia Soul and Kia Soul EV both offer roomy, quiet cabins. Both rows of seating supply plenty of head and leg room to accommodate tall passengers. The panoramic sunroof brightens the cabin and enlarges your sense of space, so you can make the most of a long commute. Both models offer upscale features, like cozy heated seats, for an affordable take on luxury.

Note that each model has different trims. The Kia Soul comes in three different variations - Base, Plus (+), and Exclaim (!) - with each offering increasing levels of luxury. Unless you live in California, where you can buy the Soul EV-e, there are two Soul EV trims. They are the base and Plus (+). However, the Soul EV Plus is more luxurious than its gas-powered equivalent, with handsome leather upholstery and ventilated front seats. If you want leather upholstery in your Kia Soul, you have to add the Primo package.

Safety: Buyer's Choice

You can also count on both models' world-class safety features. Both provide a rearview camera to help you avoid hitting the neighbor's pesky cat or an unforeseen bicyclist. Navigation technology keeps you from getting lost and, thanks to its traffic data, it can even help you get to work on time. The Kia Soul offers a range of driver aids, including forward collision warning. These use radar to detect danger and actively alert you to potential hazards.

In government crash tests, the Kia Soul earned a perfect five stars for overall protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Soul its top score of "Good" in every single crash test. Note that neither the government nor the IIHS have rated the Kia Soul EV in crash tests.
