2020 Kia Telluride

All-new for 2020 is a three-row SUV that combines luxury and practicality at a family-friendly price. The 2020 Kia Telluride sports a 3.8L V6 engine that is not only powerful but fuel-efficient and capable of seating up to eight people, with ample cargo space behind the third-row. Captain’s chairs in the second row are also optional, perfect for those who expect to carry fewer passengers.

In its class of SUVs, the Telluride carries around class and comfort with an EPA estimated 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. As a vehicle of similar stature, the Subura Ascent gets an almost identical fuel economy rating. On average, the Telluride’s 3.8L V6 with auto start/stop technology would be expected to yield a lower gas mileage than the Ascent. However, Kia’s ingenuity has created a V6 that is similar in efficiency to Subaru’s turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The Ascent gets 277 lb-ft of torque and 260 hp while the Telluride's V6 engine gets 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque.

As a primarily family-centered vehicle, safety is key. With a greater capacity to pass vehicles on the highway, evade obstacles on the road, conquer short merge lanes, and climb inclines faster than the Ascent, there more opportunities for accident prevention in the Kia Telluride.

2020 Subaru Ascent

The 2020 Subaru Ascent’s engine attempts to match that of the Telluride’s. While it is not as powerful, the Ascent’s 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine expels 260 hp and is a capable and impressive machine on the road.

A turbocharged engine re-routes exhaust back into the engine to power the cylinders more quickly. This means the Ascent’s engine works faster than a regular 4-cylinder engine. Effectively, the 2020 Subaru Ascent’s turbocharger makes the engine more comparable to that of the Telluride’s V6. While still behind the engine in performance (31 less horsepower than the Telluride), the fuel efficiency is identical to that of the Tellurides.

The Ascent’s steering has been described by some as second to none. Acceleration is smooth, and the 8 inches of ground clearance it offers help with changes in terrain as well.

Interior Design

2020 Kia Telluride

Upon sitting in the 2020 Telluride driver’s seat, you will notice the standard luxury Kia affords to all of its customers. In the standard Telluride LX, for a base price of $31,690, a single brushed metallic horizontal accent piece brings your eyes to a modern dashboard.

The standard Telluride driving experience begins with a standard leather-covered steering wheel. Next, your eyes will gravitate to the standard 8-inch diagonal touchscreen display with Apple Carplay and Android Auto capabilities.

Kia has put forward an exceptional effort when designing the driver and passenger seats in the Telluride. Whether the seats are cloth or leather trim, expect the Telluride’s attention to detail to be on par with the popular luxury brands of today.

The Telluride’s driver seats are equipped with large hip-hugging cushions along the side, and extra padding on the shoulders. The leather seat trim in the Telluride is available on the second-highest trim, called the EX. Taking the step to the EX trim will bring the MSRP to $37,090 before additional packages are added.

Passengers will experience luxury even in the standard Telluride model. Among standard features for second and third-row passengers, the Telluride proves a great value, in comparison to the Ascent. The Telluride sports four more inches of legroom in the second-row seats, and a standard sunroof that will cost the Subaru customer $6,660 on top of the MSRP.

Unlike most infotainment displays, the Telluride’s 8-inch touchscreen display seamlessly configures itself with the driver’s point of view on top of the dashboard. What’s more, is that the Kia added large pushbuttons below its screen, that help the driver navigate the standard touchscreen. The addition of physical pushbuttons ensures high user-friendliness of all drivers. You'll also find Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard features with Bluetooth connectivity.

2020 Subaru Ascent

The standard interior trim on the 2020 Subaru Ascent is comfortable and functional. Cloth seat cushions extend to offer thigh support. A helpful compartment sits above the passenger’s compartment and serves as a useful storage container. In the second row, passengers will love the comfortable captain's chairs or bench seat.

To keep all passengers entertained, the Ascent comes standard with a 6.25-inch touchscreen display also compatible with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. This display pales in comparison to the massive 8-inch screen offered on the Telluride. Like the Telluride’s physical push buttons that accompany the touchscreen display, the Ascent features one physical home button to help orient the driver.

The feel of the 2020 Ascent’s cabin completely changes when leather is introduced throughout. Well-known for its light tanned leather, the Ascent’s high-end interior requires upgrading to the Ascent Limited (MSRP of $39,345). In comparison, the Kia Telluride’s all leather option is also available for an upgrade of $2,255 less.

The 2020 Subaru Ascent interior does not gain wood grain accents until the final and highest-end trim: a detail Kia offers its customers at the second-highest trim level at $37,090. Unlike the 2020 Kia Telluride, the Subaru Ascent does not come standard with a sunroof. The panoramic moonroof in the 2020 Ascent is available after one trim upgrade and an additional package ($6,660 more than the standard Ascent MSRP).

Exterior Design

2020 Kia Telluride

The exterior of the 2020 Kia Telluride reminds former Kia customers of absolutely nothing they have ever seen before. There are no glaring or even subtle details that Kia has implemented on the outside of the Telluride that tell us they have tried to mimic the look of a well-known luxury vehicle.

The vertical rectangular daytime running lights exude creativity. They open our minds to the possibility that Kia opened a new class of vehicle, one that provides a third-row luxury SUV without the extravagant price. Standard LED headlights and complementary bold vertical taillights reiterate Kia’s message to its customers that they are out to re-design the wheel (and sell it for less than the other guy). With all of this ingenuity, Kia has still provided the attractive SUV boxed shape that so many Americans are attracted to.

2020 Subaru Ascent

The Subaru Ascent was first introduced in 2019 and received positive reactions from its loyal consumer base. Unlike conventional SUV designs, the Ascent is designed with Subaru’s best-selling models in mind: the Forester and Outback. These two vehicles have championed Subaru’s image across the world as the go-to manufacturer of station wagons.

Subaru took the image of their best-selling vehicles and mimicked it to the best of their ability, in an unassumingly much larger vehicle in the Ascent. With the classic headlight and grill position, the Ascent does not look or feel like a three-row SUV until you get close enough to touch or drive it. While the Ascent’s shape does not give off the popular SUV shape, it does not lack in practicality or space.
