Midsize, Full-Size Trucks, or Heavy-Duty – What Is the Difference?
Trucks for personal use come in all shapes and sizes, from compact models to heavy-duty ones. However, typically only three truck sizes tend to dominate a new or pre-owned car lot. The smallest size is the midsize truck, which is about the same size and weight as a midsize, five-passenger SUV. These are good if you want to use your truck for light-duty work, like a home improvement contractor or a gardener. These are also great for families who need a truck for some recreational use, but don’t need something that can haul 10,000 lb trailers.
In addition to being great family vehicles, many manufacturers make special editions of their midsize trucks that are dedicated to off-roading. These will feature such things as four-wheel drive, traction control, skid plates to protect vital parts of the undercarriage, recovery hooks, and lifted suspensions to improve approach and departure angles. Midsize trucks are also the easiest ones to drive, as many manufacturers use the frames from their SUV models for these trucks. Their smaller size typically makes them more fuel-efficient, easier to park and handle, and also less expensive than other models.
The most popular size truck is the half-ton, full-size truck. These tend to be the most versatile trucks, as they are perfect for commercial and personal use. Most manufacturers provide the greatest variety of trims, special editions, and engine options on their full-size truck models since they are designed to fit a wide spread of uses. Cab Design – Does It Matter?
Another thing to consider when buying a truck is cab design. There are three different types of cabs for most trucks on the market today. A Regular Cab has two full-size doors and one row of seats and can typically seat up to 3 passengers.
A Crew Cab has four full-size doors and two full rows of seats. These can fit 5 to 6 passengers and are ideal if you are considering using your truck as a family vehicle. Most automakers use the Crew Cab name, but Ram may call these Quad Cabs and Mega Cabs, while Ford calls these the SuperCrew, and Toyota refers to it as a Double Cab or CrewMax.
The most confusing cab design might be the Extended Cab. This has two rows of seats like the Crew Cab and two full-size doors like the Regular Cab but adds a pair of rearward opening half-size doors. The rear row in the Extended Cab is less roomy than the Crew Cab, but it also makes this design generally less expensive. The confusion comes into play from the fact that many manufacturers use a name other than Extended Cab. Ford calls this design a SuperCab. Ram refers to it as a Quad Cab. Nissan calls these a King Cab on its trucks, while Toyota has referred to it as an XtraCab or Access Cab over the years.
