Great news for Kia EV drivers—charging is about to get easier. Starting in March 2025, Kia’s electric vehicles, including the EV6 and EV9, will gain access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. While originally planned for January, the delay should be worth it.

Curious about what this means for road trips, local charging, or your EV experience? We’re breaking it all down—adapters, timelines, and how Kia fits into the growing adoption of the North American Charging Standard (NACS).

Why Are Tesla Superchargers a Big Deal?

Tesla’s Supercharger network sets the standard for EV charging with its reliability, speed, and ease of use. With over 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers in the U.S., many EV drivers prefer Tesla’s chargers over others plagued by broken screens, clunky payment systems, and slow speeds.

Opening Tesla’s network to third-party EVs aligns with the industry trend of adopting the NACS port standard, improving compatibility and creating a seamless charging experience across brands.

For Kia EV drivers, this means faster charging, greater reliability, and more options—making long road trips easier and more practical.

When Can Kia EVs Charge at Tesla Superchargers?

Kia owners will officially gain access to Superchargers in March 2025, wrapping up a rollout that had originally been slated for January. The slight delay provides Kia the time needed to ensure a smoother experience for customers.

Do You Need an Adapter?

Yes—at least for now. Owners of Kia EVs with CCS1 ports (like the 2024 and early 2025 EV6 and EV9 models) will need an NACS adapter to charge at Tesla’s Superchargers. Here’s what you need to know about the adapters: If you purchased a 2024 or 2025 Kia EV6 or EV9 after September 4, 2024, you’re eligible for a free NACS adapter. Kia will notify eligible owners through the Kia Access app when they can claim their adapters at dealerships. Owners of earlier EV6 and EV9 models, as well as Niro EV owners, will need to purchase the adapter for $249 from Kia dealerships.

Adapter Specs to Note

The NACS adapters Kia is rolling out are rated at 1,000 volts and 350 amps, which is perfectly compatible with Kia’s 800-volt EV architecture. However, this means that drivers with other EV brands shouldn’t attempt to use Kia’s adapters as they may encounter compatibility issues.

Kia emphasizes that these adapters have been “engineered to meet Tesla’s charging specifications” and are specially developed and tested for use with Kia EVs. Using third-party adapters may void your Kia warranty.

How Does Kia Compare to Other Automakers?

While most major EV brands have committed to NACS adoption, Kia’s approach offers significant benefits but with a few caveats. Here’s how the brand stacks up: Kia is offering free adapters to recent EV buyers (post-September 2024), which puts it on par with brands like Ford. However, it’s less generous than its sister company Hyundai, which offers free adapters to nearly all its EV customers. For drivers who need to purchase the Kia adapter, the $249 price tag is competitive, as it aligns with what other manufacturers are charging for similar adapters. Compared to automakers still rolling out their NACS plans, Kia’s March 2025 timeline positions it as an early adopter of Tesla compatibility—an advantage for drivers looking for fast, reliable charging options sooner rather than later.

The Bigger Picture: EV Charging is Evolving

Kia joining Tesla’s Supercharger network exemplifies a major shift in the EV landscape. The industry’s widespread adoption of NACS reduces friction for drivers and represents a collective effort to create a cohesive, user-friendly charging infrastructure.

It’s also a crucial step toward delivering a smoother EV driver experience—eliminating the fragmented charging standards that have been a barrier to EV adoption for years.
