The 2022 Kia Sorento had a couple of major and minor changes made to it, and we are excited to look into what that means for one of Kia’s favorite three-row SUVs. So, What’s New on the 2022 Kia Sorento?

The biggest and most noteworthy update for 2022 is the addition of a whole new option to the Sorento family. Kia added a plug-in hybrid Sorento to the lineup, and we are thrilled with this as gas prices across the country climb. It’s a great addition to the Sorento’s options, and we know there will be many who are very happy with this fuel-efficient upgrade. With this new addition comes a need for a few stylistic changes as well. The large 10.25-inch infotainment screen is now standard across the board for every trim except the LX.

Customize Your Performance With an Array of Powertrain Options

If you’re hoping for the ability to adjust your powertrain to maximize power and fuel efficiency, then the 2022 Kia Sorento has one with your name on it! They have gone all out with giving drivers the ability to customize and change their driving experience, starting with what’s under the hood for the 2022 Sorento.

If you’re opting for a traditional gas-powered engine, then the Sorento has two great options available. The first is their 2.5-liter I-4. This engine is a great combination of fuel efficiency and power for a three-row SUV, producing 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. This combination gives the Sorento great power and towing capacity without sacrificing fuel efficiency. You can tow up to 2,000 lbs and get an impressive 24 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway.

If the standard 2.5-liter sounds good, but you’re still looking for more power, Kia has given the option for drivers to change out their engine for a 2.5-liter Turbo I-4. The addition of the word “Turbo” is more than just an additional five letters to describe the engine. Those five letters see the Sorento getting up to 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. This additional power makes the Sorento faster and stronger, with a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. Both these engine options are excellent for anyone who needs the power of a traditional gas engine under their hood.

Maximize Fuel Efficiency With Two Amazing Hybrid Options

If you’re looking for more fuel efficiency than a standard engine, Kia has given the Sorento two great hybrid options for you to choose from. The first option is your standard hybrid engine. This 1.6-liter I-4 hybrid engine sees drivers getting up to a whopping 39 MPG in the city and 35 MPG on the highway. This incredible fuel efficiency comes without any sacrifice to horsepower and torque as well, making it that much more impressive. Maxing out at 227 hp means this hybrid is fun to drive, with fewer stops at the pump.

The next hybrid option is all new for 2022. The plug-in hybrid engine discussed earlier is your other option for a hybrid in the 2022 Sorentos. The plug-in option is a 1.6-liter I-4 13.8 kWh PHEV engine. That’s a lot of numbers and letters combined into one engine, but the numbers you should really look at are the fuel equivalents, with drivers getting 79 MPGe. That’s an astounding fuel equivalency, and for the first plug-in to ever be added to the Sorento, it’s a huge step for Kia in the right direction. We can’t be more thrilled with how much this engine can save drivers.

An Assortment of Trims for Every Type of Driver

Once you decide on an engine, Kia has given you even more opportunities to adjust your Sorento to fit your needs. The 2022 models have an assortment of different trim options available for every type of driver.

LX

This is Kia’s standard trim level for the Sorento and comes with all the basics. You get the ability to choose your drive mode with the Drive Mode Select feature, enjoy Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and get LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels. Remote keyless entry is also standard, and while this trim doesn’t have the 10.25-inch screen, it does get a very nice 8-inch touchscreen infotainment setup with a rearview monitor and parking guides. You also get the ease of sliding and folding second-row seats, and throughout the entire cabin there are 6 USB outlets for charging. This is a great entry-level trim that has everything you need, and nothing you don’t.

S

This trim gets all the goodies of the LX, with some improvements. When you upgrade your Sorento to the S trim, you can expect to have upgraded 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, added roof rails, a smart key, a power adjustable driver’s seat, and the upgraded 10.25-inch screen size that comes with navigation and Sirius XM. The front seats are also now able to be heated, along with dual-zone automatic climate control. This is probably one of the most popular trim levels for the Sorento because it is packed with value for a slight price increase.

EX

The EX trim level for the Sorento gets a couple of additional perks. This trim gets upgraded features like 18-inch wheels, roof rails, a smart power liftgate, and upgrades the second-row seats to captain chairs. The EX also gets the addition of a wireless charger.

SX

The SX is similar to the EX trim, adding a few additional features, including a panoramic sunroof and power sunshade, roof rails, 20-inch alloy wheels with a gloss black finish, and LED projector headlights. The smart power liftgate also comes with the SX trims.

SX Prestige

This trim covers essentially everything you could dream up being in a car. You get the panoramic sunroof with the power shade, upgraded roof rails, LED projector headlights, the 20-inch alloy wheels, and the upgraded leather seating is heated for front and second rows. The second row is upgraded to captain’s chairs, along with a heated steering wheel and a ventilated front row. You also get an upgraded BOSE audio system, and the instrument cluster is upgraded to digital. The Prestige has a lot of upgrades and is worth spending a little extra for all of it if you and your family spend a lot of time in your Sorento. This trim is probably one of our favorite trims just because of how nice it is to have a vehicle that has the ability to heat your seat and your hands at the same time.

Even More Trim Options for Off-Road Enthusiasts

Kia has yet another set of trims for the Sorento that share some similarities but are also entirely their own category. Dubbed the X-Line, this group of trims is equivalent to most other manufacturers’ off-road trim levels.

X-Line S

The S version of the X-Line gets upgraded wheels and a 1-inch raise to the overall ride height of the Sorento. It also gets high-utility roof rails and specialized X-Line logo bumpers. This trim level also gets heated front seats, and the driver’s seat is power adjustable. Overall, a great entry-level off-road trim for Sorento drivers.

X-Line EX

This trim gets all the best features of the X-Line S trim and adds a sunroof, power liftgate, and 20-inch alloy wheels with an X-Line gray finish.

X-Line SX Prestige

The X-Line version of the Prestige includes many of the features mentioned in the previous trims, with the addition of X-Line front and rear bumpers, as well as front and rear skid plates with hyper silver finish. This really gives the Sorento that rugged look like it’s capable of tackling any challenge you throw at it, on and off the pavement.

So Many Choices…

While Kia did make some upgrades, they kept many of the essential features the same. The Sorento is still the great three-row SUV that’s comfortable for the whole family. We love how much Kia was able to integrate the tried and true nature of their Sorento with new technology for the 2022 release.
