Choosing the Right Kia Niro to Meet Your Needs

A subcompact crossover like the Kia Niro is the perfect way to get the functionality and convenience of an SUV without worrying about a large vehicle that will take over your life. With the all-new, fully updated 2023 Niro, you have better options than ever before, including three different powertrains and amazing trim levels and features. As your Kia Niro dealer, we have customers who come to us all the time looking for the Niro but who are uncertain of which model will be right for them––that’s why we’re here to help you decide on the perfect model with everything you need.
You have one big choice to make before you get into individual trim levels and their features: which of the three available powertrains will work best for you. There is a standard hybrid model, a plug-in hybrid, and an all-electric option. Each offers a different blend of performance, range, and fuel economy. The kinds of features you can get inside these models and the amazing safety technology on them are much the same across the three different options, though you’ll find some differences in the trim levels available. Since the first big decision you should make is which engine is right for you, let’s take a look at each of them.
The Kia Niro Hybrid
For starters, let’s check out the standard Niro model, which comes with a hybrid powertrain––there’s no option for an old-fashioned, conventional gas-powered engine here. This is the sort of innovation we love to see and one of the main reasons we’re so proud to be able to carry the full Kia lineup with everything it has to offer. This standard model features a 1.6L engine with a parallel hybrid system that pairs it with an electric motor to deliver 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that makes for a rewarding and highly responsive driving experience.
With this powertrain, the Niro gets an estimated 53 MPG in the city, 54 MPG on the highway, and 53 MPG combined. You can travel up to an estimated 588 miles on a full tank of gas with the standard hybrid model, giving you the freedom to hit the road and drive a long time between stops. This is truly incredible efficiency, even by the standards of a compact crossover, making it one of the best options out there for an economical driving experience. Combine that with its low price, and it’s no wonder so many people are choosing the Niro Hybrid over any other vehicle on the market.
The Kia Niro PHEV
If you are interested in something that kind of fits between a typical hybrid model and a Battery-Electric Vehicle (BEV), then a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is a great choice. These models feature a battery-powered electric motor, just like other hybrid models, but you can charge the battery directly by plugging it into a power outlet or charging station. PHEVs are perfect if you’re interested in some of the benefits of a BEV, but you’re not in a situation where you can take full advantage of an electric car.
The Kia Niro PHEV is a terrific example of this type of vehicle, and it really gives you the freedom to get a taste of what a BEV offers without going all the way with one. With the Niro PHEV, you get a 180 hp engine and an estimated 108 MPGe. The great thing about a PHEV model like this is that it lets you utilize the electric motor to travel moderate distances without using any gas. The 2023 Niro PHEV has about 33 miles of all-electric range, which lets you make short trips without touching your gas tank as long as you plug in the battery to recharge.
The Kia Niro EV
While both the Niro Hybrid and PHEV models are excellent, at the end of the day, they still use gas, and you’ll need to keep that in mind while driving them. With the Niro EV, on the other hand, you get an all-electric compact crossover SUV that’s perfect if you’re ready to step into the future of the auto industry and leave the gas pump behind forever. This model is powered by a 201 hp electric motor with an estimated range of 253 miles from a full charge, making it the most efficient option available since you never have to pay for gas again.
This is plenty of range for most Pennsylvania drivers, whether you’re looking to go on a long road trip, get through your commute each day, or enjoy yourself on the weekend. The Niro EV takes full advantage of the power and performance of electrical engineering, going from zero to 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds and giving you an enjoyable driving experience. You get 500 kWh of charging credits on the Electrify America network of charging stations, which is the equivalent of up to 2,000 miles of free driving range with the purchase of the Niro EV, and it’s easy to charge at home, at your job, or on the road at a dedicated station.
Fantastic Features Beyond the Powertrain
No matter which Niro powertrain you choose, you’ll find incredible features inside it, though you’ll have different trim levels to choose from. The standard Niro Hybrid model has five different trims available, while the Niro PHEV and Niro EV both have two trims. That being said, you’ll find many similar features across them: the Niro Hybrid starts with the LX trim with an eight-inch infotainment display, dual-zone auto climate control, and fantastic safety features. Looking at the Niro PHEV, however, it starts with the EX trim (the second option for the hybrid model), which has a 10.25-inch infotainment display, a wireless phone charger, heated front seating, a Smart Key with push-button start and remote start, and much more.
For both the Niro Hybrid and the Niro PHEV, the highest trim is the SX Touring––but while this is the top of five options for the Hybrid model, it is the top of two trims for the PHEV. Looking at both of them, you get a sunroof, Smart Power Tailgate, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system. The Niro EV changes things up a bit with two trims called the Wind and the Wave. You’ll find similar features on them––for example, the Wind has a Smart Power Tailgate, wireless phone charger, a 10.25-inch infotainment display, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, while the Wave features a sunroof, Harman Kardon premium sound system, and head-up display. The differences in names are still worth noting and keeping in mind when considering your options.
Which One is Right for You?
As you can see, the biggest differences between these models are the powertrains they come with and the kind of performance and fuel economy or range they deliver. Beyond that, you can get very similar features in them in terms of entertainment, comfort, and advanced driver-assist technology––the names of the trims are just different between the powertrains. Choosing the right model, therefore, really comes down to picking the powertrain that meets your needs and then going from there.
